Hundreds of professional journalists from all around the world apply each year for one of the ten WPI fellowship seats. The finalists picked represent some of the top journalists in their nations. They are naturally curious, bright, and ambitious, and they approach journalism with a strong sense of commitment and duty.
In one of the world’s largest and most varied democracies, have firsthand access to, participate in, and watch the role, responsibility, and impact of a free press. You will discover how the United States’ foundational ideals of a free press and journalistic best practices assist encourage transparency and accountability of government institutions, enterprises, and organizations, including the most powerful, through an immersive curriculum.
You’ll meet and interview subject matter experts in media outlets, think tanks, and advocacy organizations around the country on a guided tour that includes stops in Chicago, New York City, Miami, Austin (Texas), San Francisco, and more. You’ll hear firsthand perspectives from national and local media outlets about new business concepts that are being explored and adopted.
While experiencing and reporting on social, economic, and political topics, you will learn about US history and current events, as well as the obstacles that the US media faces.
You’ll also meet individuals from many walks of life and get some free time to explore on your own along the way.
Eligibility
Work experience in print, broadcast, or online journalism for at least five years, including:
- News or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, websites or online publications.
- Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists and broadcast producers.
- Those who supervise journalists are eligible if they also have at least five years as a working journalist.
- Any journalism-related work completed as a university student does not count toward experience. Those who work in public relations or at organizations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible.
- Must be currently employed as a non-U.S. journalist working outside of the United States.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English.
- Potential for leadership.

Recommendation Letters
- Three professional references’ names and email addresses must be submitted by applicants.
- WPI will contact references to request online letters of recommendation.
- References should be familiar with the applicant’s work and able to speak to their journalistic ability, growth prospects, and leadership abilities in English.
- A direct supervisor should be one of your references.
- The letters must be written in English and should focus on the applicant’s experience, qualifications, and potential.
