How to get the NYSC exemption certificate without stress is an article carefully written, which explains every steps to be taken in getting the exemption Certificate of th National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

What is NYSC exemption?

The NYSC exemption means freeing a Nigerian graduate from participating in the one-year mandatory service to Nigeria after graduating from higher Institution.

Anyone who is exempted will be given a Certificate of Exemption which is equivalent to the NYSC discharge Certificate giving to that fully participate in the one-year scheme.

We have noticed that some Nigerian graduates feel bad after being exempted, while some try whatever means possible including reducing their age so that they can serve. This is probably because they are not informed that it is better to be exempted. Exemption is a kind of freeing; the Certificate of Exemption which are giving to those exempted  serve the same purpose with Discharge Certificate which is given to those that fully participated in the service.

However, some Nigerian graduates have always complained about not knowing how to get or process the NYSC exemption certificate. If you are one of them and you are reading this article, congratulations! You have finally landed to the land of solutions.

Before, I show you steps to be taken to process your Certificate of Exemption, it is important you note that exemption is something that you need to qualify for before it will be given to you.

Now, let me show you the requirements. If you have the requirements that means you are qualified.

Requirements For Processing NYSC Certificate of Exemption

1. You must be over the age of Thirty (30) years. OR

2. You must have served in any armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (military or para-military) for a period of more than Nine (9) months; or must be a member of staff of any of the following:

  • The Nigerian Security Organization or
  • The State Security Service or
  • The National Intelligence Agency or
  • The Defence Intelligence Service.


3. You must have been conferred with any National honor.

If you are in the any of the stated categories, therefore you are qualified to be exempted from the NYSC service.

NOTE: Those who graduated from a Part-time programme are to get Letter of Exclusion which is very different from exemption.

Letter of Exclusion is a letter stating that you are excluded from the NYSC service. It far below the NYSC Certificate of Exemption and Discharge Certificate, and cannot serve the same purpose with them.

Just before I show you how to process the NYSC Certificate of Exemption, let me briefly take you through the Eligibility.

Eligibility to process NYSC Certificate of Exemption

For you to eligible to process the NYSC Certificate of Exemption, you must have been graduated from either ‘Foreign’ or ‘Home’ Institution with first Degree or HND from approved or accredited institution by (NUC, NTBE, NCCE).

Note: Foreign trained graduates are to submit their Certificates and other Documents to the Mobilization Department for Evaluation.

Process for collection of NYSC Certificate of Exemption

Let take home trained Graduates, then after we take Foreign trained because the processes are different.

A. For Home trained Graduates

The process begin from the Institution of graduation.

  1. The Institution of graduation are to first submits the masters list of their graduates alongside with the senate approved results to the NYSC.

  2. Check/verify if your name on the Senate Approve list at the NYSC online portal to make sure your name is on the list.

  3. Wait until time for online registration for your batch.

  4. Proceed to register online, just like any other Prospective Corps Member. If you are exempted, NYSC will automatically re-direct you to a page where you are to print-out your exemption slip.

  5. Please, print-out the exemption slip and take it to your Instruction of graduation. You Institution will make corrections if there is need, sign and then take it returned to NYSC as an agreed/corrected document.

  6. With the print-out, NYSC will produce, document and then send the Certificate of Exemption to your Institutions for issuance to you.

  7. Go back to your Institution and collect the Certificate of Exemption.

Note: Collection of Certificate of Exemption for home trained graduates is only done in the Institution of Graduation and not in any NYSC office.

B. For Foreign trained graduates

The process begins with the evaluation of credentials and other documents (International Passport).

  1. After being evaluated, proceed to online registration with your Batch.

  2. NYSC will then exempt you if you qualified for it.

  3. Print-out the exemption slip and take it the NYSC Directorate Head, Abuja along side with all the documents you uploaded during online registration.

  4. At the NYSC Headquarters, your Certificate of Exemption will be produced, documented and given to you at the stipulated time communicated.

  1. Go to the NYSC headquarters, Abuja for evaluation of your credentials, it is after the evaluation of credentials that you will be registered, and this is physically done at the NYSC Directorate Headquarters, Abuja.

  2. At the point of registration, the classification of who to be called-up or who to be exempted; is determined.

Certificate of exemption are therefore produced for those exempted from the service.

  1. Certificate of exemption for foreign graduates are to be collected at the NYSC directorate headquarters at the stipulated time communicated.

General Note: collection of Certificate of Exemption is grouped under the three batches of the service year, depending on the date of the registration.

Also, collection of Certificate of exemption is strictly with identification, like international passport and the bearer must be physically present.
