TWAS-NRF Doctoral Programme for Scientists From Developing Countries 2022 | Apply Now

Application for the TWAS-NRF Doctoral Programme 2022 is open. South Africa’s NRF (National Research Foundation) and DST (Department of Science and Technology) are working in a partnership with TWAS to bring about advancement in science, especially around developing countries through this very program.

Those to partake will be in school of research for a maximum period of three (3) years. Scientists who are from developing Nations aside South Africa are given the opportunity to run PhD research in natural science.

Partial cost of study funding will be provided to candidates awarded under TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowships, and this will cover tuition fees (R30,000 yearly), and cost of accommodation (R60,000 yearly).

  • Also, an affordable economy flight or student permit expenses for the program will be paid for.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must not be studying, living or working in south Africa in 2021.

  • In the field of natural science, applicants must have obtained a degree in MAc.

  • Applicant(s) must not be more than thirty-two (32) years of age during application period.

  • In order to apply for doctoral funding, you must have obtained a minimum of 65% at the level of masters’.

  • Applicants who were studying towards a degree, or undertaking research in south Africa or previously employed, and have return to their country of origin, but have been in their country of origin for less than 2 years or not eligible for the application.

  • Applicants must be citizens and permanent residents from countries developing elsewhere and on the Africa continent.

  • During his/her period of fellowship must not take up other assignments.

  • Registration must be at the south Africa public university 2022, on a basis of full time and must be based at any public research institution in south Africa including HEIs, National research facilities and science councils.

  • An academic official record on the university letterhead should be provided

  • Any accompanying family members must be financially responsible by individual

  • Must have a proof of evaluation of all foreign qualifications (obtained from a non-south Africa universities ) evaluated by the SAQA or proof that the qualification to the SAQA for evaluation has been submitted by applicants. There will be a rejection of application when there is a failure to submit proof.

  • An official proof of study application and acceptance letter from a host south Africa laboratory, department or institution is provided.

  • Are not eligible to pursue research under science, engineering, and technology under disciplines as under the NRF-TWAS doctoral funding will be supported by only these discipline.

  • Must the law of immigration and visa of applicant’s of home country and south Africa. Visa and other study permit must be arranged by applicant under the programme of study in south Africa. The NRF nor the TWAS will neither be responsible for visa arrangement assistance. However, the cheapest visa or study permit cost, and return economy flight for applicants of the NRF-TWAS Doctoral will be cover by the NRF.

  • Upon completion of studies, applicants must return to their country origin. Failure to return back to original country will refunding of all expenses to NRF.

  • A motivation from the prospective doctoral supervisor is provided. The applicant has the responsibility to contact the respective institution to secure a supervisor, and apply for acceptance for the study of doctoral.

  • A detailed research project that must be approved and registered by the host institution and a letter of support from the prospective host supervisor should be provided.

  • Certificate of English language proficiency should be provided if available at the application time. If not available this will be required before the release of any NRF fund to student. And the following requirements of the English language proficiency Academic test must be meet:TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5); or TOEFL iBIT (minutes 20); or IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0) ;or Cambridge minimum 58.

Application

South Africa Institution Application for Acceptance

  • Registration and approvement of the research project must be done by the host institution (There must an attachment of a letter of support from the prospective supervisor to the application).

  • Internal cut-off dates will be set up by universities for application, and those dates must be obeyed by applicants.

  • An official letter must be provided by applicants from their host south Africa Institution, laboratory or department and motivation from the applicant’s host. Contacting of the respective institution to apply for acceptance is the responsibility of the applicant. In addition, securing a supervisor for the study is also the applicant responsibility.

Evaluation of foreign qualifications from the south Africa qualifications authority (SAQA)

Application

Foreign qualifications must not be posses by applicants (obtained from non-south Africa universities) evaluated by the SAQA .There must be a submission of application and prove that at least the applicant has submitted his/her evaluation at SAQA, failure May lead to rejection of application.

To allow time for processing, applicants are advised to start application on time.
