The former Northern Region Premier, Late Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardaunan Sokoto, erected the old general hospital in Keffi in 1957. The Federal Medical Center Keffi was established there in April 2000. The takeover followed a statement made by President Olusegun Obasanjo the year before, in 1999, just after taking office as the democratically elected president. In order to provide healthcare delivery services to the populace at large, he declared at the time that 44 Federal Medical Centers would be created across the nation.
