Many buildings, including school with boarding facilities, filling station and churches have been destroyed by an explosion that rocked Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Saturday morning around 1:00 am.
The explosion happened less than a kilometre to Akure Airport, cutting off Akure-Owo road.
According to the residents of the area, they believe the explosion was caused by bombs, but investigations are still ongoing by the police.
The blast caused panic among residents of Obaile, Osi, Iluabo, Eleyowo, Akure and other close communities, destroying a church known as Possibility Prayer Mountain for All Nations and schools known as Aina Awawul Secondary School and Preston International College, Akure.
Some people living near the church premises were reportedly injured, while the police is still yet to give an official report as to what actually happened.
In reaction to the explosion, the Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu tweeted that he has been briefed by the security agencies and will be at scene of the explosion.
“I’ve been briefed by security agencies in the state concerning the loud blast that was heard in Akure. I will be at the scene to assess on the advise of heads of our security agencies.
“I ask that all citizens remain calm as we ascertain details of the incidence.” The tweet said.
