The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations are the three primary organisations in charge of the test. The test is available in two versions: Academic and General Modules.

Types of IELTS Modules

Below are the two types of IELTS modules:

1. Academic modules

This section is for individuals taking the test for academic admission to undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional courses.

2. General Modules

Those who are travelling to English-speaking nations for non-degree vocational or training programmes, secondary schooling, job experience, or migration often take this test.

It takes around two hours and 45 minutes to complete the test. A valid foreign passport is required for IELTS registration.

IELTS Format

Below are the approved IELTS format

1. Speaking

This portion lasts around 11 to 14 minutes and assesses your ability to communicate in English. It is divided into three parts: in the first, you must appear for a personal interview about yourself; in the second, you must talk on a specific issue and include points on the topic; and in the third, you must participate in a discussion with the examiner based on the topic given in part 2.

2. Reading

For Academic IELTS and General Training IELTS, this part is different. However, you will have 60 minutes to complete 40 questions, each of which will take 20 minutes.

3. Academic Reading

This 60-minute test has 40 questions in each of the four parts. There is one extended paragraph in each part. The test taker must read passages and then respond to questions. The passages are detailed and written for a non-specialist readership. Checkout Current Cost of UK Visa in Nigeria 2021

4. General Reading

This is a 60-minute test with three 40-question parts. Each part contains two to three sentences culled from workplace situations, official papers, ads, and other sources. Test takers will be required to read passages and respond to questions.

5. Listening

There are 40 questions in each of the four sections of this 30-minute test. It assesses the exam takers’ ability to listen.

The test taker is expected to listen to discussions, subjects, and so on, and then answer questions based on what they heard. You must complete a number of summaries, phrases, and brief questions.

6. Writing

The IELTS assesses your comprehension abilities rather than your understanding of English. It’s more of a test of your time management abilities and ability to digest information in a short amount of time. In one hour, you must complete two writing assignments. The Academic IELTS writing section is different from the General IELTS writing section.

7. Writing Academic Modules

There are two tasks, and it is recommended that candidates spend around 20 minutes on task 1, which needs them to write at least 150 words, and 40 minutes on task 2, which requires them to write at least 250 words.

Task 2 is given greater weight in the marking process than Task 1.

Candidates are required to describe graphs, diagrams, or specific procedures in their own words and in the context of a problem topic or argument in task 1. It is a formal writing style.

8. Writing of the General Module

This is a 60-minute assignment that consists of two tasks. You must compose a letter in response to a circumstance in task 1 and an essay in response to an issue theme argument on their capacity to participate in personal contact, elite, and offer broad factual information in task 2.

Scoring in the IELTS

IELTS does not include a pass or fail option. Candidates are evaluated based on their test results. For each module of the exam, candidates are given a score on a band scale ranging from 1 to 9. To create an overall band score, the individual module scores are more than averaged and rounded.
