Following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) weekly meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has been directed to pay consequential adjustments on the new minimum wage before December 31st. Since then, Nyscinfo.com has been receiving series of questions as regard to this minimum wage arrears payment. The most frequently asked question is "will Federal Government (FG) pay ex-Corps members minimum wage arrears". Before I answer this question let's first understand the meaning minimum wage. What is minimum wage? Minimum wage has been defined as the lowest salary that an employer is mandated by law to pay workers. Will ex-Corps members minimum wage arrears? Both ex-Corps members and serving Corps members will receive the new minimum wage arrears. However, those who will receive this arrears are those who were in service when minimum wage was signed into law. That means minimum wage arrears will be paid to those who were in active service between April and December, 2019. What date did Buhari sign N30,000 minimum wage bill into law? The National Assembly passed the minimum wage bill on March 19th 2019, and it was transmitted to President Buhari on April 2nd. On Thursday, April 18th, 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law. How can minimum wage arrears be determined? The old minimum wage is N18,000 and the new minimum wage is N30,000. Therefore, N30,000 - N18,000 = N12,000. It has been 9 months since Buhari signed minimum wage into law. Therefore, the minimum wage arrears for those that have been employed since April to December is N12,000 x 9 = N108,000. Note: the consequential adjustment arrears include those that their salaries were reviewed upward because of the new minimum wage. The Federal Government (FG), through Covid-19 Presidential Task-Force (PTF) has asked the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC to start preparing for resumption of Orientation Camp activities.

It hinted that Orientation Camp activities may resume after the completion of the newly approved eased lock-down, which lasts for another one month.

This was made known during a press briefing by Sani Aliyu, the Coordinator of  Presidential Task-force on Covid-19.

Below are his words;

“We have advised the National Youth Service Corps to start planning ahead of resumption in future phases, but not within this current phase of the response.

“We will work closely with them to design policies that may allow this to happen in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, NYSC management responded by extending online registration for 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2.

“This is to inform 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Prospective Corps Members that Online Registration has been extended to Tuesday 11th August, 2020.”

Furthermore, the PTF maintained that until safety was guaranteed, schools would remain shut, said that only exiting classes: primary 6, JSS 3 and SS3 have been approved to resume while other classes and tertiary institutions remained closed.

“All day care and primary schools are to remain closed till further evacuation, however, while primary schools must remain closed, registered pupil may proceed to take the national common entrance as soon as it is feasible.

“For secondary and Tertiary Institutions, just to clarify, these remains closed; however, we have made arrangements for exitting classes in their final years of schools to resume and partake in examination in line with guidelines,” he said.
