The governor of Kaduna, Nasir el-Rufai, believes that empowering women improves society’s quality of life.
He made the remarks as he announced the disbursement of N200 million from the Kaduna State Women Empowerment Fund (KADSWEF).
The flag-off event was part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day in 2022.
The fund, according to the governor, is intended to provide financing to small-scale traders so they can expand their operations.
“When you give a loan to a woman, she pays for her children’s education, feeds her children, and helps her husband. Our women in Kaduna have done very well to make us succeed,” he said.
“Women are the basis of humanity; women are the root of humanity and when the quality of the lives of women is improved, the quality of society improves.”
El-Rufai claimed that the state’s ministry of women’s affairs had sought N100 million, but that “we doubled it to N200 million and we have been consistently doing it since 2019”.
“We didn’t do it until 2020 because of the COVID-19 lockdown,” he added.
He praised state executive council members for regularly supporting programs that empower the poor, particularly “those that really need the help of the government to stand and climb the ladder”.
