Nine Killed As Container Falls On Bus In Lagos

In the Ojuelegba neighborhood of Lagos State, an articulated vehicle towing a 20-foot container collided with a commercial bus, crushing nine passengers to death.

According to investigations, the commercial bus lost control and plummeted over the side of the Ojuelegba Bridge while picking up passengers at the bus stop nearby.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) personnel were among the first on the scene and they ripped off the top of the bus and suspended a container to save a woman and transport her to the trauma center.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of LASEMA, told Channels Television on Sunday that the incident was true.

He clarified that the nine casualties included a boy child, a girl child, four adult men, three adult females, and a youngster.

A brief statement confirming the collision was also released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The agency claims that efforts are being undertaken to save the victims.

“A container laden truck has fallen on a bus at Ojuelegba, inwards Fadeyi. The effort is currently being made towards rescue and evacuation,” the statement read.

“Recovery of the fallen container is still ongoing, though it has been taken off on top of the minibus but is yet to be completely removed from the location. Traffic is still on hold, and we have a backlog of traffic presently at Alaka.

“Kindly exercise patience or find an alternative if you are not trapped in the traffic.”

Some people were reportedly stranded as a result of the event.

According to a witness, the truck driver intended to prevent the bus from passing him.
