5 Places You Cannot Work Without NYSC Certificate

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Certificate is one of the most respected educational documents in Nigeria. In this post, we shall look at five (5) places where you cannot work without an NYSC Certificate.

Participating in the NYSC scheme is said not to be compulsory, but it is indirectly mandatory since you cannot secure a job in many organizations or pursue postgraduate studies without the NYSC Certificate.

Any Nigerian who graduates from a higher institution at the age of 30 years or above is issued a Certificate of Exemption, while those who graduate below the age of 30 are mobilized to serve in the NYSC before obtaining the NYSC Certificate. Check how NYSC calculate age limit for mobilization.

How to get the NYSC Certificate?

After graduating from a tertiary institution, candidates are required to register online for the NYSC program. Those who are above 30 years will be exempted and redirected to print an exemption slip. Nigerian-trained students should submit the exemption slip they printed online to their institution to process their exemption letter.

Meanwhile, foreign-trained students are to take the slip to the NYSC Abuja headquarters along with other documents for the collation of their exemption letter. You may also like to check how to process NYSC exemption letter for both local and foreign trained students.

Those who are below 30 years will be posted to the NYSC Orientation Camp, where they will spend 21 days. After spending some time in the NYSC Orientation camp, they will be posted to their Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

They will carry out the National Assignment for the remaining 11 months and one week, completing a full year. i.e., 3 weeks in Camp + 11 months at PPA = 1 year.

After completing the National Assignment, the NYSC Discharge Certificate will be awarded to deserving Corps Members. Note the term “deserving” because only Corps Members who perform well will be given the NYSC Certificate.

Now, let’s go straight to the main point.

5 Places You Cannot Work Without NYSC Certificate.

1. Banks

The NYSC Certificate is one of the required documents to work in a Nigeria bank. Although, some banks might accept you as a temporal/contract staff without asking for NYSC certificate. But for permanent staff position, you need to produce your NYSC Certificate.

2. Insurance Companies

Just like banks, insurance companies ask for NYSC Certificate before employment. Although, they can waive this policy but that depend on your relationship with the employers.

3. Multi-national companies

Most multinational companies in Nigeria insist that candidates must produce NYSC Certificate before they will be offered a job. Below are some multinational companies in Nigeria that ask for NYSC Certificate:

  • Chevron (Oil & Gas)
  • Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) (Oil & Gas)
  • Nestlé Nigeria
  • Total (Oil & Gas)
  • Halliburton Energy (Oil & Gas)

4. Manufacturing Companies

Most manufacturing companies in Nigeria demand NYSC Certificate during recruitment. Below are few examples of a manufacturing company;

  • Guinness Nigeria
  • Nigerian Bottling Company
  • Nigerian Breweries Plc

5. Government Organization

Depending on the position you are applying for. If you are applying for top position in governments, they will require NYSC Certificate.

There are also many other companies in Nigeria that are not listed here.

Note: NYSC Certificate of Exemption can serve the same purpose as Discharge Certificate. But your age will be written boldly on it. This will automatically expose you to some jobs that required below 30 years.
