Two years after she was born, her parents returned to Lagos, a then small town in South Western Nigeria. Twenty years later, at the age of 22years, Asa returned to France, where she launched her music career. During her holiday in Nigeria, Asa discovered musical acts such as D’Angelo Raphael Saadiq, Erykah Badu, Fela Kuti and Angelique Kidjo, a multiple Grammy Award-winning singer from Benin Republic. As of this time, she was still pursuing her education and was following the careers of these musical acts whom she admired and dreamt of being like.
Family Life And Growing Up
Asa is the only female child of the family among three brothers. While growing up, Asa would be locked in singing while doing house chores in the absence of her parents. Her father had but a collection of records that include soul classics and Nigerian music which include Fela Kuti, Aretha Franklin, Ebenezer Obey, Lagbaja, and King Sunny Ade etc. this would later have a great musical impact on Asa as she drew inspiration from them.
Musical Career
In 2004, Asa came in contact with a woman name Janet who later became her manager. In the same year, she was introduced to the Nigerian music gem Cobhams Asuquo, who later became her producer and musical partner. Having been back in Nigeria, she released her popular single “Eye Adaba” which was also her first, and then followed it up with another hit single “Jailer”. Her kind of music received instant acceptance in Nigerian and she dominated the airwaves.
Upon signing on to Naïve Records, Asa released her first studio album, with the heavy involvement of Cobhams and the new entrant – Christophe Dupouey. This album would later win her the prestigious French Constantin Award in 2008, having been voted best of the 10 fresh singers or groups by a panel of 19 music industry veterans in Paris. On 25th December 2010, she released her second album titled Beautiful Imperfection, which has the lead single titled “Be My Man”. In 2011, she performed alongside Fefe at the Sydney Festival.
