Google announced the expansion of its two-step verification (2SV) procedure auto enrolments for log-ins on Tuesday in order to improve account security and offer a safer Internet experience for its customers.
This is in honor of World’s Safer Internet Day, which aims to keep internet users secure.
According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), February 8 is International Safer Internet Day. It’s a day dedicated to encouraging people to use online technology responsibly.
According to Dawn Dimowo, Google Nigeria’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager, the two-step verification initiative resulted in a 50% reduction in account breaches.
He said the intrusions affected 150 million Gmail accounts and two million YouTube creator accounts.
According to her, the 2SV uses mobile phones to verify a user’s identification every time they access their Google Account from a different device.
She claims that, in keeping with the subject of this year’s global Safer Internet Day, “Together for a better Internet”, Google is actively working on new technologies.
The technologies, according to Dimowo, would enable a safe, smooth sign-in experience and eliminate the usage of passwords, which has shown to be a major source of data breaches and phishing attempts.
‘’Users often find passwords hard to remember and have to update them regularly.
“We don’t just plug security holes; we work to eliminate entire classes of threats for people who depend on our services.
‘’Today alone, billions of people around the world will use our products to help with things big and small from conducting e-payment transactions or teaching an online class full of students.
‘It is our responsibility to keep users’ personal information safe and secure,” Dimowo said.
According to her, Google offers tools like Security Check-up, which gives consumers practical advice on how to make their Google Account more secure.
According to her, Google increased its work to eradicate password threats in 2021 by starting to auto-enroll users in 2SV, which adds an extra layer of security to people’s accounts when fraudsters try to get into them.
According to Dimowo, the campaign resulted in more than 1.5 billion security checks.
This decrease, according to her, demonstrates how having a second form of verification can help protect your data and personal information.
She stated that Google was pleased with the initial findings and the positive feedback from users and the community.
Google’s manager expressed excitement about other continuing behind-the-scenes initiatives aimed at making consumers even secure.
Google suggests doing frequent Security Check-Ups to ensure that accounts are prepared for recovery by adding a phone number and a backup email, according to her.
Google also suggests using Google Password Manager, which she claims secures accounts and prevents criminal actors from gaining access.
She said that it was built directly into Chrome, Android, and the Google App to create safe passwords for all online accounts, including shopping, banking, and e-learning sites.
