The government of Nigeria led by President Muhammadu Buhari had indefinitely suspended Twitter’s operation in Nigeria. The ban on Twitter is currently active as nobody in the country can access the social media site without VPN. But why was Twitter banned? Here we will look at the main reason why Nigeria ban Twitter. Check out proven ways to make high sales on Twitter.
Access to Twitter through Nigeria’s main internet service providers (mtn, glo, 9mobile, etc.) has been suspended, though the platform can still be accessed on some wi-fi networks in Nigeria.
Why Nigeria ban Twitter operation
The government of Nigeria suspended Twitter two days after Twitter removed a tweet by President Buhari on June 1. Buhari’s post technically threatened to kill individuals destroying government’s properties in the south-east part of the country.
Below is the Buhari’s post that Twitter removed;
“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
Meanwhile, the tweet by the president of Nigeria didn’t go well with Twitter, they had to delete it, and also suspended Buhari’s account for 12 hours, on the ground that the tweet violated its policy on “abusive behavior”.
Responding to this, the Nigeria’s Government, through its Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced its decision to suspend the operation of Twitter in the country.
According to Lai Mohammed, the government had acted because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining country’s corporate existence.”
Below is the statement issued by the ministry of information;
“When people were burning police stations and killing policemen in Nigeria during EndSARS, for Twitter it was about the right to protest,” he said. “But when a similar thing happened on the Capitol, it became insurrection.”
The above reason is why Twitter was suspended in Nigeria. Check out 4 best VPN to bypass Twitter ban in Nigeria.
