Azeez Adeshina Fashola, popularly known with stage name, Naira Marley is Nigerian singer and songwriter. He was born on 10th May, 1991, he first hit the Nigerian music scene with his controversial title of the President of the Marlians, a spiritual kind of a country that exists only in the hearts of his huge fan base.

Naira Marley, surprisingly, graduated with a distinction in business from Peckham Academy, London, having moved to the country at the tender age of 11. He also studied business law at Crossways College (now Christ the King Sixth Form College).

Naira Marley Music Career

As a young boy, Naira Marley had plans of becoming an MC and a voice over artist but later swapped the plans for singing, which he began in 2014 after discovering his music talent and passion for music, having been encouraged by his close friends. His first single, Issa Goal, was released in 2017 and it became the official World Cup song of the Super Eagles of Nigeria at Russia 2018.

In 2019, Naira Marley released his controversial yet popular tracks, “Am I a Yahoo Boy” and was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that same day. He followed up with two other tracks, “Soapy” and “Lord of Lamba”.

Controversies

The EFCC arrested Naira Marley and his friends Zlatan, Tiamiu Kayode, Adewunmi Moses, Micheal “Taqueesh” Adenuga and Abubakar Musa over issues many believed to be connected to fraud. While three others were released after five days, Naira Marley was remanded in EFCC’s custody, having claimed they have overwhelming evidence against him. He was charged on 16 May 2019 with 11 counts of fraud before a Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. While still in prison, he released “4 Nights in Ekohtiebo” on 19 May, 2019. The track talks about friends, foes and the people who have admiration for him. He pleaded “not guilty” to the 11 counts charges leveled against him before the Federal High Court, Lagos, in May 2019. He was granted bail to the tune of N2, 000, 000 and was subsequently released on 14 June, 2019.

Again, he was arrested and detained by the Nigerian Police Force for flouting covid19 lockdown rules. He was, again, arrested and arraigned by the FCT Administration before a mobile court in Abuja after he hosted a music concert without adherence to social distancing protocols.
