5 Reasons Why House of Reps Want To Scrap NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was established on 22 May 1973 by Yakubu Gowon, a military head of state in those days. The main reason for creating the scheme is to reconstruct, reconcile, and rebuild Nigeria after the civil war. Generally, the scheme was designed to foster national unity and cohesion. However, since inception, graduates of universities, and later polytechnics have been required to take part in the program for one year. Having known why the scheme was created, we shall look at the reasons why House of Representatives want to scrap NYSC Program.

On May 24, 2021 the bill to scrap NYSC, sponsored by Hon Awaji-Inombek Abiante (PDP) reached second reading in the Green Chamber. Nyscinfo had reported that amongst other reasons, the bill cited indiscriminate killing of NYSC members across Nigeria. Now, let’s look at the reasons why House of Reps want to scrap NYSC.

Reasons why House of Reps want to scrap NYSC

Below are reasons given by Hon Awaji-Inombek Abiante who sponsored the bill that called for scrapping of NYSC;

1. Biased posting of Corps members

The children of the rich are never posted to states like Sokoto or Yobe? It is the children of the poor that are sent to those places where they are butchered. Example: Buhari’s son served in Abuja, Davido served in Lagos, Osinbajo’s daughter served in Abuja and rest of them.

2. Failure to address the essence of NYSC establishment

The law maker argued that the government of Nigeria has failed to address the essence of NYSC establishment while several reform efforts have also not yielded desired results.

3. Ethnic and Religious killing of innocent Corps members

incessant killing of innocent corps members in some parts of the country due to banditry, religious extremism and ethnic violence; incessant kidnapping of innocent corps members across the country at their places of primary assignment and in transit.

4. NYSC causes unemployment

Public and private agencies and departments are no longer recruiting able and qualified Nigerian youths, thus relying heavily on the availability of corps members who are not being well remunerated and get discarded with impunity at the end of their service year without any hope of being gainfully employed,

5. Road Accident

Many Corps members have also been killed in road accidents and by robbers as they travel  to their Place of Primary Assignments (PPA) or deployment state..

Our comment

The National Youth Service program has been largely successful in the past. But like every other good thing in Nigeria, it has been open to corruption, abuse and manipulation by the elites as times have rolled by. As Nigeria’s insecurity worsened, with terrorism and banditry gaining a stronghold in the northern region, asking someone to serve in the North is like telling them to go and die. Some parents, now pay huge money to ensure their wards are not posted to North.

Do you think NYSC should be scrapped? Let’s hear from you in the comment section below.

  1. Nysc should be scrapped is a waste of time to me, after graduation the student should be given a reasonable money to start up a business or established themselves on the field of their study, thank

  3. The NASS have a point especially no1.
But scraping the nysc is not the best solution as most graduates depend solely on that allowance. If nysc is to be scrapped, let the government at least pay each graduate some certain amount for them to start up something. One cannot waste all his resources on school only to come out with nothing. That’s my humble opinion thanks

  4. It should not be scrapped but needs some amendments, NYSC helps in aspect of unity in Nigeria, if not NYSC, i may not go to any other parts of Nigeria except my southwest, it also creates job opportunities for some Nigerians, if we want to look into religion aspect, we will also scrap higher institutions due to religious bigotry in some people, check our federal universities you understand what i mean! Even secondary schools! May God almighty help us in this nation of ours.

  6. I served in North eastern Nigeria (bauchi state) in the year 2020/2021 considering the security challenges being faced by Corp members in the north eastern region, starting from (armed robbery attack at regular occasions in Corp members lodgement federal polytechnic bauchi corpers’ lodge and Muslim corpers’lodge(MCAN lodge bauchi) as a case study and other life threatening issues coupled with inestimable corruption from the side of the scheme management) I will support the notion NYSC should be scraped

  7. The write up is biased, why only the north? Insecurity is all over the country. In my opinion, NYSC should not be scrapped rather be reformed. Youth should be moblilsed to camp after graduation. They should receive required and desired entrepreneual skills since comman man has no hope for employment anymore. After the three weeks of camping they (corp members) should be deployed to there states to serve for at least 5-6 month as National assignment there after they should be given NYSC discharge certificates and a minimum amount of money to help them esterblish a business to put the knowledge they acquired into practice.

  8. The management of nysc shouldn’t be scrap , how much is a Corp member eligible for in his service year

In my own view nysc shouldn’t be scrap but , the Corp members should be given their 1million naira after camping to go and start something instead of waisting some of their time and money.

  10. That’s not enough reason for Nysc scheme to be scrap okay, if Nysc is scrap will the government fund the student once they have graduated the answer is no, this Nysc scheme give rooms for little skills and also the stipend been paid by the corp members once they are done they can be able to start up business of their own, since no job in the country.
Scrapping it is not a good idea at all.

  11. Scrapping NYSC is like devaluing the importance of education
. Our leaders are not capable of ensuring adequate security so the are looking for means to cover their mess.
I can see selfishness in the motion, they want to cut expenses.

  12. Schools are no longer employing staff they are only hoping and depending on cop’s members to do their work. in security everywhere you can’t even walk on the street safe anymore. I think they should close Nysc and pay everyone off

For the purpose of employment!’corps members should not be posted to public and private sector again. There should be serving at the various local government secretary in their state and be moving out for sensitization.

  14. This your write up is biased. Is it only in the North that there is insecurity? You said parents pay huge sums of money for their wards not to be posted to the North. Are there no Yahoo boys and cultists in the South?

    • It true corpers from South and west pay a huge amount to relocate…they don’t want to serve in the north.

To me is better NYSC should be erase, the total allawee should be given to graduate after their University study to start a good business
