The Federal Government’s quest to reduce youth unemployment has yet again received a new boost as FG finally launched the Generation Unlimited Initiative in Abuja. The federal government of Nigeria has flagged off a new empowerment scheme targeted and decreasing further, youth unemployment in Nigeria. The new scheme which is christened Generation Unlimited Initiative was designed by the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) to assist Nigeria overcome its unemployment rate and attain economic growth.
While delivering the key note address in presence of State Governors, Government functionaries, Entrepreneurs, and members of the diplomatic corps at Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo through a prerecorded video expressed optimism that the initiative will assist Nigerian youths actualise their full potentials. He disclosed that the presidency, state governors, ministries, Departments and Agencies will collaborate with Generation Unlimited Initiative Nigeria to make the programme a reality, saying that failure to build the youths will have its consequences on the country.
Kevin Frey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Generation Unlimited Initiative said in his remark, which the platform GenU provides will happen if the youths have the fitting digital skills and access to opportunities. He commended the Tony Elumelu Foundation for its commitment since the project began three years ago.
On his own part, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State promised that the state will collaborate with Generation Unlimited Initiative as he enumerated the areas where Kano state is positively impacting the lives of youths.
Edward Kallon, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, conveyed optimism that Nigeria’s youths will be the foundation of economic transformation in Africa and engine of revolution and innovation. Generation Unlimited Initiative Nigeria is a collaboration intended to transform, educate, employ and provide needed skills to young people by bringing together with government and other economic players, as well as international development collaborators.
