The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship gives female and nonbinary journalists with a focus on human rights and social justice academic and professional opportunities to develop their reporting abilities. The Fellowship was established in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, a correspondent for The Boston Globe and a 1998 recipient of the IWMF Courage in Journalism Award, who passed away on May 9, 2003, while covering an incident in Iraq. The IWMF established this program in cooperation with Neuffer’s family and friends to preserve her legacy and advance her work in the areas of social justice and human rights.
Women and nonbinary journalists with at least three years of experience in print, broadcast, or digital media—either as staff journalists or as independent contractors—are eligible for the Neuffer Fellowship. Any countries are invited to apply, but in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program, non-native English speakers must have outstanding writing and verbal English skills. The Fellow will complete coursework and research at the MIT Institute for International Studies as well as journalism internships at The New York Times and Boston Globe.
The program’s adaptable format gives the fellow the chance to conduct scholarly research and improve their reporting abilities. Previous fellows have profited from chances to publish material with their bylines through a variety of media channels.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Neuffer Fellowship is open to women, nonbinary and gender non-conforming journalists whose work focuses on human rights and social justice issues.
- All applicants for the Neuffer Fellowship must be working journalists with at least three years of full-time, professional journalism experience. Internships and journalism-related work completed as a university student do not count as professional experience. Applicants may be affiliated or freelance journalists.
- Journalists from any country around the world are eligible to apply. However, applicants must speak, read, and write English fluently in order to fully participate in and benefit from the Fellowship.
Benefits of IWMF Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship
- A fixed monthly stipend will be provided to cover housing, meals, and ground transportation during the fellowship.
- Round-trip economy airfare will be purchased from the fellow’s place of residence to Washington, D.C., and from Washington, D.C., to the fellowship city.
- The fellow will receive health insurance during the program.
- For fellows residing outside of the United States, the fellowship also covers the costs of applying for and obtaining a U.S. visa.
- The fellow will be fully responsible for any additional incidental expenses and other costs.
Timeline
- April 23, 2023: Applications due
- June 2023: Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow will be selected
- January 2024: Fellowship begins in Boston with an internship at the Boston Globe and research/coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies
- May 2024: Fellow moves to New York for internship at The New York Times
- June 2024: Fellowship ends
