Nigeria as a country has 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory. The country is blessed with numerous natural resources including crude oil which is the main source of the country’s riches. In our previous post we showed you the 10 poorest states in Nigeria, So, here we shall look at the top 10 richest States in Nigeria and their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Since crude oil is the biggest source of Nigeria income, States that produce oil are regarded as the most wealthiest states in the country. Although, not all of them make it to our list of top 10 richest States.
Note: All the 10 richest States in Nigeria can survive on their own without getting help from the Federal government.
List of top 10 richest states in Nigeria
Below is the list of 10 richest states in Nigeria and their Gross Demotic Product (GDP);
1. Lagos State ($33.6 billion)
The richest State in Nigeria is Lagos. The state has highest internally generated revenue (IGR) with a GDP of $33.6 billion. Lagos is currently the 5th largest economic centre in Africa. Also, Lagos being the for Federal Capital of Nigeria, houses many headquarters and organizations. The size of Lagos land is 3.577 square kilometers, and arguably the most populated country in Nigeria. Apart from being the richest state in Nigeria, it is also the most developed state in the country.
2. Rivers State ($21 billion)
The second richest state in Nigeria is Rivers state. Its Internally Generated Revenue is over N80 billion in 2016. Rivers state makes most of its money from crude oil and natural gas. The half of oil production in Nigeria comes from the state. Rivers state GDP is $21 billion with $3,965 per capita. Since Rivers is the biggest oil producing states in Nigeria, oil firms such as NNPC, Chevron, Shell, and so on are located in the city of Port Harcourt. The land area of rivers state is approximately 11.077 square kilometrekcs with about 5.2 million people.
3. Delta State ($16.75 billion)
Delta State is the 3rd richest state in Nigeria. It is among the oil producing state with an Internally Generated Revenue of N40.8 billion. Apart from having large deposit of oil, Delta state also have other mineral resources like; limestone, decorative rocks, tar kaolin, silica, industrial clay, lignite and sand. The Delta state GDP is $16.75 billion with a per capita of $3,990. The land area is 17.698 square kilometers with estimated population of 4 million people.
4. Oyo State ($16.1billion)
The Oyo state’s internally generated revenue is N16.7 billion in 2016 with a GDP of $16.1billion and per capita of $2,666. Oyo state has land area of 28.454 square kilometers with population of about 12 million people. The major source of wealth for Oyo state is Agriculture, and most of the people in this state are farmers.
5. Imo State ($14.2 billion)
Imo state is the only state in South East that make it to the list of richest states in Nigeria. The total land area is 5,530 square kilometres with a total population of about 4.9 million people. The GDP is $14.2 billion with $3,527 per capita. Imo State is among the oil producing states in Nigeria.
6. Kano State ($11 million)
This State is located in the Northern Nigeria with a land area of about 20,131 square kilometer. The total population of people in Kano is estimated to $11 million. Kano state major source of income is Agriculture. The state’s GDP is $12.4 billion.
7. Edo State ($11.9 billion)
The capital of Edo State is Benin City. The estimated population is 5 million people with a land area of 17,802 square kilometres. Edo state source of income is tourism. It also produces crude oil and other mineral resources such as limestone and quarry. The state GDP is $11.9 billion.
8. Akwa Ibom ($11.2 billion)
Akwa Ibom is located in the coastal southern part of Nigeria with a population of over 5 million people with land area of 7,081 square kilometer. The state is among the top oil producing state in Nigeria with GDP of $11.2 billion, and $2,779 per capita.
9. Ogun ($10.5 billion)
Ogun state is also one of the richest states based on GDP. The state GDP is $10.5 billion, and $2779 per capita. The population in Ogun state is over 4 million people, and a land area of 7,081 square kilometres.
10. Kaduna State ($10.3 billion)
Kaduna state is located in the northwest part of Nigeria. The land area is 46,053 square kilometers with a population of about 6.1 million people. Agriculture is its major source of income. It agricultural produce include cotton, peanuts, sugarcane, onions, etc. The Kaduna state GDP is $10.3 billion.
