Abba Kyari Biography
Abba Kyari is a Nigerian Police officer, born on March 17, 1975. He is from Maiduguri, Borno State. Prior to his suspension, he is a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and a member of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT). He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
Before his appointment as IGP-IRT, he served at Lagos State Police Command as the Officer-In-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Abba Kyari became famous in Nigeria after successfully arresting popular kidnapper kingpins Evans and Wadume, and many others.
In the year 2000, Abba was admitted into Police Academy Wudil, Kano State. And he graduated as cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He was posted to Adamawa State Police Command for his one year mandatory attachment in Song Police Division.
His comparison with Jack Bauer of the famous Hollywood movie ‘24 hours’ was because of many investigations and fights he lead against the criminal Boko Haram Terrorists, especially the ones that led to the arrest of the Terrorists’ top commander, Umar Abdulmalik, and notorious kidnappers.

When the news of his indictment by a US Court hit the internet and media houses in Nigeria, many people confused him with the late ‘Abba Kyari’, the former Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu. Abba Kyari is the oldest son in a family of 30 children. He is of the Kanuri ethnic group of Borno State in the Northeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
After his mother left when he was just 7 years, his step mothers cared for him and other 12 children then. Coming from a poor home, Abba Kyari started riding a motorcycle to earn a living while doing his secondary school.
He was admitted to study Geography at the University of Maiduguri, where he engaged himself in menial jobs, including selling petrol in the black market.
DCP Abba Kyari Police Career
Abba Kyari enrolled for the Nigeria Police Force and was trained at the Police Academy Wudil, Kano. He became a police officer on 1st May 2000, getting the rank of the Assistant Superintendent of Police.
In 2018, at age 43, about 18 years after he became a police officer, he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), making him the second youngest officer to receive such rank in the history of the Nigerian Police Force.
Before his suspension over allegation of involvement in fraud, he served in Adamawa, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. During his years of service, he headed the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as the Officer-In-Charge, Assistant Commissioner of Police, and Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team.
