Many concerned individuals have been asking whether someone who graduated from the College of Health can participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. The most recent question sent to our desk is, “Will I serve in NYSC after finishing from the College of Health or School of Information Management?”
The direct answer is ‘yes,’ but unfortunately not for all courses or programs offered in the Colleges of Health. Whether you will go for NYSC largely depends on the course you studied. We will provide a clear explanation; please pay attention to the information below.
A graduate of a College of Health is someone who has successfully completed a course of study at a College of Health. These institutions typically offer programs related to health sciences and allied health professions. Graduates may obtain various academic qualifications, including National Diplomas (ND), Higher National Diplomas (HND), or certificates, depending on the specific program they pursued.
These graduates are equipped with knowledge and skills in areas such as health technology, nursing, medical imaging, pharmacy technology, and nutrition. The nature of the qualification depends on the type of program and level of study completed at the College of Health.
Upon graduation, individuals from Colleges of Health may pursue further education, enter the workforce in healthcare-related fields, or, in some cases, be eligible for programs like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in countries like Nigeria, where NYSC service is linked to certain academic qualifications.
Programs in Colleges of Health Technology
Colleges of Health Technology typically run three basic programs:
1. Regular National Diploma (ND)
2. Regular Higher National Diploma (HND)
3. Certificate (Diploma Courses)
Regular ND and HND Programs at the College of Health
Those admitted for the regular National Diploma (ND) and later proceed to the Higher National Diploma (HND) program at the College of Health will be mobilized for the NYSC program after graduation.
Here are the steps to qualify for NYSC
1. Gain admission to study ND program at any College of Health through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
2. Complete a 2-year ND program.
3. After the ND program, undergo one year of Industrial Training (IT) in any recognized establishment.
4. Purchase an HND form from the same college or another to obtain a Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate.
5. With an HND Certificate from the College of Health, you are eligible for NYSC provided you are not over 30 years.
However, those who do not want to proceed for the HND program at the College of Health can purchase JAMB Direct Entry form to move to a University where they will study the related course.
College of Health Certificate (Diploma) Program
Admission to this program is usually not through JAMB. Graduates from this program are not eligible to take part in NYSC. Here is a list of courses offered under this program:
- Health Assistant,
- Medical Imaging Technician,
- Pharmacy Technician,
- Food and Nutrition, etc.
Warning: Only HND and University Bachelor’s Degree holders can participate in the NYSC program irrespective of the institution of graduation. If the certificate issued to you by the College of Health is not an HND, there is no NYSC eligibility. In other words, if you are admitted to the College of Health Technology for the College of Health certificate (diploma) course only, you are not eligible for NYSC.
If your admission into the College of Health is not through JAMB but you are awarded an HND after graduation, you need to do JAMB regularization to qualify for NYSC.
Important Note
If you truly want to go for NYSC, we advise you to pursue ND and HND programs at the College of Health Technology. Not all College of Health Institutions offers ND and HND programs, so be careful. Check out the list of institutions that participate in NYSC.

I believe students need come together to sue the government of this country including States establishing these colleges. I knew it is fraud to establish a school and allowed students to study up to HND and later frustrate them with NYSC.
I am a victim. After studying up to HND in College of Health Technology Ogbia, Bayelsa State as pioneer and had graduated since 2009, I remain unemployed because of NYSC which students are not allowed to participate. For this school, the only requirement for admission was their entrance exams (written and oral). But the certificate from WAHEB gotten in this school in Nigeria continuously remains a source of frustration to citizen. I used the same certificate in England for masters and there was no complaint however, on my return the same country continued in it’s fraud, refusing me employment.
I know the antics of NYSC is to frustrate the less privileged. If this is not true, then NYSC should be open to all who had obtained HND, BSc etc.
