In 2009, the university officially became a registered member of the Nigerian Union of Universities (NUC), and in July 2009, the institution had its First Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah. The same year, academic activities started fully. The university runs multiple academic centres as it was built to be a centre for community service and entrepreneurship. The centres are:

Institute for Asian Studies
Centre for Modernity and Religion
